How local farmers help select “Friends of Agriculture”

As a Michigan farmer, you may have noticed that some candidates for public office have received a “Friend of Agriculture” endorsement from Michigan Farm Bureau. Below is a brief explanation of how this process works.

Michigan Farm Bureau’s Political Action Committee (AgriPac)—in cooperation with County Farm Bureau candidate evaluation committees—evaluate and endorse candidates who will best support Michigan agriculture and Farm Bureau policy.

When candidates measure up, they receive AgriPac’s endorsement as a “Friend of Agriculture.”

AgriPac’s election year activities rely on grass roots opinion. County volunteers, who earn their living in agriculture, give their time to serve on County candidate evaluation committees. They interview candidates and pass on their “Friend of Agriculture” recommendations to AgriPac.

To learn more about Michigan candidates that have received the “Friend of Agriculture” endorsement, visit the Michigan Farm Bureau web site at michiganfarmbureau.com, click on "visit" under “Farm Organization,” and then click on politics/elections. You can also visit your local County Farm Bureau for information about political action activities involving agriculture.

You’ll need more than Social Security to retire comfortably

Now here’s some news that might be a little scary to people approaching retirement age. The Social Security Administration says that Social Security is the largest source of income for most elderly Americans today.

“But Social Security was never intended to be your only source of income when you retire,” said Micheal Astrue, the commissioner of Society Security. “You will also need other savings, investments, pensions or retirement accounts to make sure you have enough money to live comfortably when you retire.”

That’s a direct quote from the Social Security Administration. The government is telling you you’ll need another source of retirement income to live comfortably.

And here’s where Farm Bureau Insurance can help. Your Farm Bureau Insurance agent offers annuities and retirement plans that can provide you with a lifetime retirement income.

You’ll retire more comfortably with all the guarantees that a Farm Bureau Insurance annuity will bring into your life. Your agent can help you determine a retirement plan that will work best for you.

Social Security’s future not too bright... All the more reason to consider an annuity

Even the Social Security Administration is a little worried about the future of Social Security, which has been paying out benefits to retirees since 1935.

“The Social Security system is facing financial problems, and action is needed soon to make sure the system will be sound when today’s younger workers are ready for retirement,” the Social Security commissioner said. “In 2016 we will begin paying more in benefits than we collect in taxes. Without changes, by 2037 the Social Security Trust Fund will be exhausted and there will be enough money to pay only about 76 cents for each dollar of scheduled benefits.

“We need to resolve these issues soon to make sure Social Security continues to provide a foundation of protection for future generations,” the commissioner concluded.

But whatever happens to Social Security, you should consider a supplement to your retirement…like an annuity from Farm Bureau Insurance. An annuity offers guarantees... including guaranteed safety, guaranteed interest earnings, tax advantages, and a lifetime retirement income.

You’ll be sitting pretty at retirement with a guaranteed income from your Farm Bureau Insurance annuity, supplemented by your Social Security benefits, whatever they might be.

Announcing a statewide search for past winners of the America & Me Essay Contest...

Farm Bureau Insurance is putting out a call across Michigan—and beyond—for past statewide winners of our America & Me Essay Contest.

We’ve been sponsoring the contest in Michigan schools for over four decades and we’ve honored hundreds of statewide winners. If you know one or more of them, we want to hear from them, reconnect with them, and recognize them again.

To view a list of every statewide winner dating back over 40 years, you can go to the Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan web site: www.farmbureauinsurance-mi.com, and click on “Were you a statewide winner of the America & Me Essay Contest?” from the America & Me Essay Contest tile ad, and from there you will be able to view the entire list year by year or click on one of the decades listed. There is a simple form that we would like past statewide winners to fill out and submit to us. We want to hear from as many statewide winners as possible so they can be part of our America & Me Past Winners Club and share in some of the fun things we have planned.

The America & Me Essay Contest is the longest running essay contest in Michigan schools. Over the years, students have written about their roles in America’s future, their American heroes, and, in recent years, their personal Michigan heroes.

If you know past winners, please let them know we want to hear from them. They were an inspiration when they won the contest and we’d like to know what’s happened in their lives since then.

The information will go directly to Lisa Fedewa (in the Farm Bureau Insurance home office), who has been coordinating the contest for nearly 20 years. If you have questions, you can e-mail Lisa at LFEDEWA@FBINSMI.COM.

Do you need life insurance? Here’s an easy way to find out...

It’s September. The kids are back in school, fall is coming in, and you have a little time to think about a serious issue: do you need life insurance?

This is the perfect time to ask that question because September is Life Insurance Awareness Month.

So let’s find the answer. Keep in mind that the purpose of life insurance is to replace your income so your family and loved ones won’t be left without resources if you should die.

Here are some guideline questions:
  • Do you have dependents (children, spouse, parents living with you, etc.)?
  • Do you have someone who would suffer financially if something should happen to you?
  • Do you own a business or have a partner in a business?
  • Do you have loved ones who need you?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you probably need life insurance. The next question is how much life insurance do you need.

That also has an easy answer. Talk to your Farm Bureau Insurance agent and he or she will help you determine the right amount of life insurance for your situation.

Nothing can replace you, but at least life insurance will give you the peace of mind knowing that your family will be financially secure after you’re gone. Get the peace of mind that only life insurance can give. September is the month to make that happen.
