A tractor is not the place for quality time

Tractors are designed for just one person. Adding another, especially a child, greatly increases the risk of injury or even death.

Across the U.S., tractors are responsible for 41 percent of the accidental farm deaths of children under age 15--yet 4 out of 5 farm children regularly ride tractors with family members.

In many rural areas, having children ride on the tractor with parents or grandparents is considered part of the family tradition, or even quality time. But it takes just a few seconds for a child to fall off of or under a tractor, and a few moments of companionship aren’t worth that risk.

While riding the tractor may be a family tradition, it’s easier to bury a tradition than a child.

Permanent protection in an uncertain world

Permanent life insurance means lifelong protection and cash values you can borrow against.

You can build your family’s future on it.

Know what to do, where to go when severe weather strikes

Michigan experienced a long and severe tornado season in 2007, with 22 tornadoes--well above the state’s average of 16--causing four deaths, 11 injuries, and more than $150 million in damages.

The Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness stresses the importance of being prepared for storm dangers--and offers this advice:
  • Plan ahead. Be sure everyone in your household knows where to go and what to do in case of severe weather at home, in the workplace, or at school.

  • Immediately seek the nearest shelter if caught outside when a thunderstorm approaches.

  • If a tornado warning is issued for your county or if you feel threatened by a storm, go to the basement and get under something sturdy. If no basement is available, go to an interior part of the building on the lowest level. A good rule of thumb is to put as many walls between you and the tornado as possible.

  • Listen to NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards or local radio, TV, and cable stations for the latest weather updates.
