Each of the winners will receive a $1,000 college scholarship. The Scholar-Athlete Award competition also recognizes thousands of other outstanding scholar-athletes in Michigan each year. Applications for the 2008-2009 Scholar-Athlete Awards will be available in the fall. Top America & Me Essay Contest winners honored May marks the climax of our 39th annual America & Me Essay Contest as we bring the top essayists, their teachers, and their families to Lansing for a celebration of their accomplishments. Competition for next year’s honors will begin in the fall. Every school in Michigan with an eighth-grade class will be invited to participate. Each year, thousands of Michigan eighth-graders, representing hundreds of schools from across the state, submit essays in the competition, which we have sponsored since 1968. We will soon gather excerpts from the many fine essays students wrote this past year and publish them in a booklet for everyone to enjoy. Support the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Farm Bureau Insurance is supporting the American Cancer Society’s 24-hour Relay for Life in several Michigan communities throughout the spring and summer. Relay for Life is a community celebration that gathers family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors to honor and remember those who have battled cancer. It’s a team-centered event that raises funds for the battle against cancer--and it’s an unforgettable experience for everyone who takes part. We encourage you to become involved with a 24-Hour Relay for Life in your community. Labor Day fun run crosses Mackinac Bridge For the fifth consecutive year, the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day, Sept. 1, will include a fun run. Hundreds of Michigan residents, representing all 83 counties, will join Gov. Granholm for an early-morning jog across the five-mile-long bridge. The event is sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance, the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, and the Michigan Department of Community Health. A web-based lottery will choose the participants, and each of Michigan’s 83 counties will be represented by at least one runner. To find out more, visit www.michiganfitness.org/bridgerun.html. ACES: May event encourages commitment to lifelong fitness ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) With-A-Friend, an annual celebration of physical fitness, focuses statewide attention on the importance of regular physical activity and its contributions to long-term health. Michigan schools annually lead the nation in ACES involvement, and the participation of nearly a half-million Michigan children in fitness activities on May 7 is a vivid reminder that exercise is vital for people of every age. Although ACES is just a one-day event, it has inspired Michigan schools to encourage their students, friends, and family to become more physically active. This is Farm Bureau Insurance’s 10th year as sponsor of ACES in Michigan--and also the 10th consecutive year of involvement for 42 schools from across the state. For more information on ACES and other fitness activities, contact the Michigan Fitness Foundation at 1-800-434-8642 or visit www.michiganfitness.org Related Links: Events Parents/Students |
