FAQ - Auto Claims

What do I do if I have an automobile accident?

  • Call the police
  • Determine if anyone is injured and get their names if possible
  • Obtain the name, address, license plate number and name of the insurance company of other drivers involved
  • If possible, write down the names and addresses of any witnesses
  • Do not admit being "at fault" or discuss the amounts of liability insurance you carry
  • Give notice to your agent as soon as practicable

Will I need an estimate for repairs to my vehicle?

If your vehicle is drivable, your Claim Representative will need:
  • One repair estimate from the body shop of your choice; and
  • Clear photos to show all damage

If your vehicle is not drivable, a Claim Representative will contact you regarding an inspection of the vehicle when they receive the claim assignment.

Will my insurance pay for my car to be towed if I'm in an accident?

If you carry comprehensive and collision coverage on your policy, reasonable towing charges to the nearest repair facility would be included in the covered loss.

Will my insurance pay for a rental car if I'm in an accident?

Rental car coverage is optional. If you elected to include the Rental Reimbursement Coverage Endorsement on your policy, contact your agent or claim representative about a rental vehicle.

If I'm injured in an auto accident, what benefits do I have under the Michigan No-Fault act?

Your No-Fault automobile policy provides lifetime medical benefits on either a primary or excess basis. Reasonable and customary treatment of injuries that resulted from an automobile accident, and benefits for medical mileage are available upon proper documentation. Wage benefits are available on either a primary or excess basis for the length of time you are disabled because of an automobile accident for up to 36 months from the date of the accident.

Check your policy to see whether you chose primary or excess for medical and wage benefits.

    Primary

  • Medical - Your primary No-Fault automobile policy provides lifetime medical benefits for reasonable and customary treatment of injuries that resulted from an automobile accident. Benefits for medical mileage are also available upon proper documentation.

  • Wages - Wage benefits are available for the length of time you are disabled because of an automobile accident for up to 36 months from the date of the accident.

  • Replacement Services - You may be entitled to receive reimbursement for services, such as housekeeping or yard work that you are unable to do because of your auto accident-related injury. This benefit allows up to $20 per day for reasonably incurred expenses for up to three years from the date of the accident.

    Excess

  • Medical - Your No-Fault automobile policy provides excess medical coverage. This means that medical bills from the automobile accident should be sent to your health carrier first. They will send an explanation of anything that is not covered. Farm Bureau must receive a copy of this Explanation of Benefits in order to consider excess medical payments. Benefits for medical mileage are also available upon proper documentation.

With an excess policy, there is a deductible that can be satisfied by the payments from the health carrier. If there is no primary health carrier we will take a deductible from our payments.

If your primary health carrier is an HMO, PPO, or PPOM, all treatment needs to be sought under the guidelines of your health plan, prior to seeking coverage from Farm Bureau.

  • Wage - Excess wage benefits are available if you lost wages because of an injury caused by an automobile accident. Wage benefits are available for the length of time you are disabled because of the accident up to 36 months from the date of the accident. Excess wage loss means Farm Bureau deducts other wage disability payments that you receive from someone else before Farm Bureau can start making wage payments.

If you do not have any other wage benefits, then there will be a deductible taken before we can make our first wage payment.

  • Replacement Services - You may be entitled to receive reimbursement for services, such as housekeeping or yard work that you are unable to do because of your auto accident-related injury. This benefit allows up to $20 per day for reasonably incurred expenses for up to three years from the date of the accident.

If my car breaks down, will Farm Bureau pay for me to have it towed? How many miles??

Road service coverage is optional, and allows for towing costs up to the limit shown on your policy declarations. Limits of $50, $75 and $100 are available. Also, $150 is available for motor homes. Please refer to your policy or call your agent to see if you have road service and what your policy limit is.

The accident wasn't my fault, will the other driver's insurance company pay for my car?

Under Michigan's No-Fault law, all drivers go to their own insurance company to pay for their automobile damage, regardless of whose fault the accident was. If you don't have coverage for collision damage to your auto under your automobile policy or if you had to pay a deductible, you may be able to collect a maximum of up to $500 from the at-fault driver's insurance company (or from the driver if they don't have insurance).
