FAQ - Auto Insurance Terms

Description of Terms

Comprehensive

Comprehensive is optional coverage available on the Family Automobile policy.

Comprehensive coverage provides payment for loss or damage to the vehicle for causes other than Collision or upset. Glass breakage, falling objects, fire, theft, explosion, earthquake, missles, windstorm, hail, water, flood, vandalism, riot and civil commotion, or colliding with a bird or animal are all included perils.

Collision

Collision is optional coverage available on the Family Automobile policy.

Under Michigan No-Fault Law, the Insured is responsible for collision damage to his/her own auto, regardless of who caused the accident. Collision insurance is available in three forms:
  • Broadened Collision
Broadened collision pays for direct and accidental loss or damage to the insured auto caused by collision with another object or by upset. This coverage is subject to a deductible, unless the damages to the insured auto are a result of a collision with another auto and provided that the operator of the insured auto is not substantially at fault in the accident.

  • Regular Collision
Regular collision pays for accidental loss or damage to the insured auto that is caused by collision with another object or by upset. This coverage is subject to a deductible, regardless of fault. No endorsement form is attached.

  • Limited Collision
Limited collision pays for direct and accidental loss or damage to the insured auto caused by collision with another auto, only if the Insured is not substantially at fault in the accident from which the damage arose. "Substantially at fault" means a person's action or inaction was more than 50% of the cause of the accident. A deductible is available.
The collision deductible amount does not apply to loss caused by a collision with another auto insured by a Farm Bureau Insurance Company. Also, a deductible does not apply to loss caused by collision with an uninsured motorist, provided ALL of the following conditions are met:
  • The Insured has Innocent Victim Family Protection and Collision coverages.
  • The owner or operator of such uninsured auto has been identified.
  • The damages so sustained exceed such deductible amount.
  • The owner or operator of such uninsured auto is legally liable for such damages.

Rental Reimbursement
Automobile Rental Reimbursement is optional coverage available on the Family Automobile policy.

The policy may be endorsed to provide for reimbursment to the Named Insured for the rental of a substitute auto from a car rental agency or garage. The orginal auto must be unusable because of a covered physical damage loss (Comprehensive or Collision) and the repairs to the original auto must exceed $250.

This coverage provides up to a maximum of $30 per day, for a maximum period of 30 days, for the expense incurred by the Insured for the rental fee (excluding mileage charges) from a car rental agency or garage.
