America & Me Essay Contest
Announcing the winners of the 39th annual America & Me Essay Contest for Michigan Eighth Graders
The America & Me Essay Contest was founded by Farm Bureau Insurance in 1968 to encourage Michigan youth to explore their roles in America's future. Since that time, nearly a half-million Michigan eighth graders have participated in the contest. The 2007-2008 top ten winners competed against over 5,000 other students from over 500 Michigan junior highs and middle schools to win their top positions. The student essays for this, the 39th annual contest, were based on the topic, "My Personal Hero." The final ranking of the top ten winners was determined by a panel of judges made up of Farm Bureau Insurance Executive Vice President Jim Robinson, and two of the top ten statewide students' teachers from the 2006-2007 contest year. As sponsor of the contest, Farm Bureau Insurance has earned 11 national awards from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. The top ten winners from this contest will receive their plaques, medallions, U.S. savings bonds valued from $250 to $500, and cash prizes of $250 to $500, at an awards banquet in Lansing on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. In addition, the top ten finalists will meet with State Government leaders, be honored at Oldsmobile Park as special guests at a Lansing Lugnuts minor league baseball game, and enjoy a luncheon cruise aboard the Michigan Princess Riverboat on the Grand River. We are pleased to announce the top ten statewide winners, their rankings, the school that they attend and city in which the school is located. As Michigan's Insurance Company, we proudly salute these outstanding Michigan students.
