My Hero is Fighting for My Freedom

My personal hero sometimes works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week enduring temperatures of 120 degrees, with 75 pounds or more of life saving gear on his back. He has been shot at, sandwiched in his tank, attacked by snipers, trapped in terrible sand storms, and watched his Battalion mates die right before him. My personal hero Is Sergeant Bill Hess with the U.S. Army, 9th Engineer Battalion, 1st Infantry Division of Schweinfurt, Germany, and every day since February 2, 2004, he has sacrificed his safety for my freedom while fighting the war in Iraq. This is the ultimate gift by anyone.

When Bill finally returns back home to Germany, after his second tour duty, he will be promoted to Staff Sergeant. Bill Hess is from Gladstone, Michigan. He is my personal hero because he has made a commitment to a career that is dangerous and life threatening. Bill is very honorable because he is sacrificing his life with his wife, Lisa, back in Germany, and with his parents and siblings in Gladstone, to instead be with the Iraqi families.

It takes a man of confidence to fight for something that may be an impossible fight with the Iraqis. Iraq is not a democratic country, and they are not used to having individual freedoms such as voting or women's rights. They also do not have state or country rights like we have in the U.S.A. Not all children have the opportunity to go to school or does every home have plumbing or even clean water. Most importantly, their freedom of speech is done in hatred, which results in violence.

Most of what is being reported about the war in Iraq doesn't really reflect all of the good that I know Bill is personally involved in. This is yet another reason why Bill is my hero. Bill joined the Army to work full-time at making a difference in a community, and he is doing that right now for all of us. Bill has helped rebuild communities, trained Iraqi soldiers, patrolled neighborhoods and borders to keep Iraqis safe, confiscated weapons and explosives, built a relationship with Iraqis so that they can eventually "watchdog" their own communities, and he visits with the men, women, and children to encourage them to do good things. This is a very big responsibility.

Bill's goal in life is to make the Army a career for him. He started this goal by joining the Army to gain money for college. Before he even enlisted with the Army, he was in the National Guard in his junior and senior year at Gladstone High School. Later, he attended Bay de Noc Community College to receive an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice. Bill was also very athletic when he was younger, which is also one of the reasons he is such a physically strong soldier. From the age of seven to nineteen, Bill was involved in Gladstone Little League, Major League, Junior League, Senior League, and later Legion League. He also was involved in youth wrestling, football, and basketball. Also, as a boy, Bill loved to hang out with his brother Tom and his friends.

In summary, this is my personal hero. The American Heritage Dictionary states that a hero is, "Any man noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose; especially, one who has risked or sacrificed his life." Bill has done this for me and for you. May God bless you, Sergeant Bill Hess.
